LJ account expiring [Jan. 11th, 2012|03:21 pm]
Ok so my paid LJ account is about to expire. I do recall how annoying it was to have ads on the site. It's only $25/yr and is well worth it to get rid of the ads. However I'm not really on here much any more. Unless G+ and Facebook become a lot more annoying, I don't see me being on here enough to worry about it.

It's been fun LJ.

Happy Bill of Rights Day [Dec. 15th, 2011|09:10 am]
http://www.cato-at-liberty.org/today-is-bill-of-rights-day/

It’s a disturbing snapshot, to be sure, but not one the Framers of the Constitution would have found altogether surprising. They would sometimes refer to written constitutions as mere “parchment barriers,” or what we call “paper tigers.” They nevertheless concluded that having a written constitution was better than having nothing at all.

The key point is this: A free society does not just “happen.” It has to be deliberately created and deliberately maintained. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.

Navigation in the Tron Car [Jun. 7th, 2011|10:37 pm]
So I finally worked out how to get turn by turn directions in the car. There are two ways (and like a good libertarian I'm going to choose a third option):

The First way is with Microsoft SYNC. The other way is with the Droid.

What MS SYNC does is makes a phone call on your phone to some automated system. You speak your destination and then it downloads the route to the car. The call ends and the car somehow magically knows where you are and gives you directions. If you wander off route, it will make another call to download a revised route.

It works well enough. The nice little computer voice cuts in over the radio and tells you when to turn. As long as you stay on route there's nothing really to complain about. The route it chose wasn't what I would have chosen and was slightly different from google maps, but it got you there.

What I really don't like is the need for the phone calls to a remote system. I'm pretty sure one day MS is going to end the service and everyone is going to be screwed. Also it is entirely dependent on voice recognition which I've had problems with such systems in the past. It didn't have any problems with me on the test so maybe not a valid worry.

If you go off route it isn't so great. By time the phone call is placed and new directions are downloaded you could have just turned around. Once I even passed the new route's first turn before the download was complete. That caused some horrible flashbacks to my VZNavigator days.

Also the other problem is every time it calls, you obviously can't be using your phone. That's something I'm doing a lot more in the car of now that the Bluetooth is working.

The other way: Directions from the Droid.

Use the navigation feature from the Droid. In order to get it on the car speakers, you have to turn on the "Bluetooth audio stream." Unfortunately this means you can't use the radio for anything else. Long periods of silence with a sudden "Turn Left at Thingamabob St"

While I do prefer the directions and the voice from the Droid, the lack of use of the radio makes this an unacceptable solution. I'm also not clear how it affects making and receiving calls. It seemed to get confused and not ring or let me pick up. Further testing is needed. Maybe when I have some mp3s on the Droid I'll try this option again.

Not being a huge fan of either, I suggest one of two other options. 1) Buy the car with the built-in GPS Navigation. It works and doesn't require a phone just updates once in a while. Only drawback is that it didn't come with the hybrid model. 2) get a stand alone GPS and use that. That worked extremely well on this past weekend's road trip. You still have to have another device in the car, but there's plenty of ports for it.

Really what 4th amendment is the California supreme court reading? Obviously not the one that says:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

The Real Job Starts Now [Nov. 4th, 2010|10:58 am]
Good advice to the newly elected Congress from David Boaz

http://www.cato-at-liberty.org/the-real-job-starts-now/

His advice:

* Get serious about spending
* Start rolling back the health care overhaul
* Stop the looming tax increase
* Take a hard look at the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
* Take a similar hard look at the war on drugs
* Stand up to the special interests
* Avoid social issues like gay marriage
* Respect the Constitution

Prop 19, Employment at Will, and Social Peace [Nov. 4th, 2010|08:19 am]
An interesting interpretation of why Prop 19 died. I hope he's right.

http://www.cato-at-liberty.org/prop-19-employment-at-will-and-social-peace/

Prop 19 failed also because it overreached. One feature attempted to protect the “rights” of employees who get fired or disciplined for using marijuana, including a provision that employers could only discipline marijuana use that “actually impairs job performance.” That is a much higher bar than required by current policy.

All-in-one PCs? [Oct. 27th, 2010|09:07 am]
I'm looking on newegg for a new monitor and have decided I might as well just upgrade my computer. newegg has a category "all-in-one PC" which looks interesting. Instead of having a monitor and a tower everything somehow fits neatly into the monitor.

I'm wondering if this is a good idea or not. They seem a lot cheaper than buying a traditional computer. I suspect they're a lot like a laptop and can't easily be upgraded or worked on (OTOH, I don't usually do that).

Thoughts?

I was just reminded that CFL bulb I got at the Shad Planking three years ago died. It had a 5 year guarantee so now I've got to find the box it came in and complain loudly that I was lied to.

OTOH I'm actually shocked it lasted this long. Usually the CFLs go out in less than 6 months.

KDE 4 annoyances [Aug. 11th, 2010|11:00 pm]
So I'm currently using KDE 4.4 at work and 3.5 at home.

I agree with these people (especially the 1st):

http://abstractfactory.blogspot.com/2010/05/kubuntu-lucid-and-kde-4-reactions.html
http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/40388
http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/01/15/kde-4-beauty-only-gets-you-so-far/

A few more annoyances (or ones I want to highlight):

1) I had a bunch of panel icons to launch ssh sessions and xemacs windows on all the servers I deal with, apparently this can't be done in KDE4 (or rather it is a horribly complex workaround). Also you can't actually start konsole up with a specific profile, which doesn't really matter since you can't set a background image

2) The menu editor is horribly broken. I tried to add a new top level sub menu. It kept getting sucked into one of the existing sub menus. Then I discovered that no matter where I moved it or deleted it or what, after I saved changes it appeared in every location I had put it in. Restarting X and rebooting didn't help. Even if the editor claimed I had deleted it, there it was in the menu. I finally found a random forum post (for another distro) that told me where the actual menu file was. I opened it up and OMFG it was a mess. It looks like some sort of XML file and there was a about 50 entries for my new submenu some with a deleted tag, some with a notdeleted tag and all completely in the wrong place. i chopped them all out and won't be editing the menu again.

3) Adding an item to the panel. Does not seem possible unless it is already a widget. It is possible to add an existing menu item to the panel. however as i mentioned in the previous item i won't be editing the menu again so I won't be able to add any of my own items to the panel.

4) while attempting #2 and #3, I some how got an icon on the desktop. I could not get it back on the panel where it belonged. Now I don't know what I did, but it is completely gone from the desktop and the panel. I don't know what it did b/c I had never gotten around to clicking on it.b Also my desktop folder or whatever is now missing too. But that stupid thing in the upper right corner is still there.

5) Wallpapers can't go across screens. Each screen has to have its own wallpaper. This was a nice feature in 3.5.

The real question is when do I throw in the towel and install another desktop environment?

The Post Office finally has its act together? [Jul. 30th, 2010|03:06 pm]
So all this week I've sent packages and letters to places like Texas and California. Somehow everything has arrived in 2 days. Normally from my post office to anywhere west of the Mississippi is at least a week. Usually longer. Everything was shipped with delivery confirmation but nothing else above the standard. I'm very pleasantly surprised.
